More About the Presenters
Drs. Berrios-Siervo and Wodushek will provide an update on the role of neuropsychologists in determining appropriateness for epilepsy surgery. Dr. Berrios-Siervo will offer a brief review of standard procedures and special considerations in pediatric populations specific to developmental concerns, language lateralization/reorganization issues (including bilingualism), as well as benefits/challenges of additional assessment procedures (e.g. MEG, Stereo EEG). Dr. Wodushek will review cognitive, gray matter, white matter, and functional connectivity studies in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE) to demonstrate that this “focal” epilepsy is not a focal disorder. He will discuss how the structural and functional findings are likely to impact cognitive profiles and review additional clinical variables that predict cognitive presentation. Finally, he will discuss the long-term course of cognition in mTLE and how this may impact late life cognitive health and dementia prevalence.
Dr. Gretchen Berrios-Siervo is an Assistant Professor at Children’s Hospital Colorado/University of Colorado School of Medicine. She obtained her degree in Clinical Psychology (PsyD) at Carlos Albizu University in Miami, Florida where she also completed her Internship at Miami Children’s Hospital. She completed a two-year post-doctoral fellowship in Pediatric Neuropsychology and Brain Imaging at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center/Dartmouth College. Dr. Berrios-Siervo has focused her career on evaluating children with epilepsy, as well as with children presenting with a variety of other medical and neurological concerns. She has also specialized in cultural neuropsychology issues including evaluation of Spanish/English bilingual children and adolescents.
Dr. Thomas Wodushek is a board-certified clinical neuropsychologist and assistant professor in the Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine where he is the Director of the University of Colorado Health Neuropsychology Clinic. He completed his PhD at the University of North Texas, with neuropsychology internship at the University of North Carolina. He completed his post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Virginia. He continues to practice as a generalist neuropsychologist with a special interest in epilepsy and regular participation with the UCHealth Comprehensive Epilepsy Surgery program.
For the program, the participants will be able to:
1. Review indications for epilepsy surgery in pediatric populations and the role of the neuropsychologist in the pre-surgical evaluation
2. Review and discuss special considerations for evaluation within a pediatric population prior to epilepsy surgery (developmental, language reorganization, bilingualism, case examples)
3. At the end of this lecture, the learner will be able to describe the varied cognitive profile associated with mTLE in adults.
4. At the end of this lecture, the learner will be able to describe the distributed brain abnormalities in mTLE and how they are associated with cognitive findings in adults.
This program is approved for 1.5 hour of continuing education. The University of Denver Graduate School of Professional Psychology (GSPP) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. GSPP maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
