Presurgical Epilepsy Evaluations and Bilingual Patients
presented by
Michelle Miranda, PhD, MPH
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, about 21% of the people in the U.S. speak a language other than English at home, that is 1 in every 5 adults or 67 million people. Bilingual and multilingual people are quickly becoming the rule rather than the exception, yet monolingual language processing systems are still considered the norm. Since language is such an integral part of everyday life, it is important to thoroughly assess a patient’s multilingual profile. This is important not only to determine the language of the neuropsychological assessment, but also to provide the medical team with information about the languages that are important to assess for surgical planning, particularly in presurgical epilepsy evaluations. This course will review literature regarding the neural underpinnings of language processing in multilingual people and will then review the main variables that are important to consider in order to obtain a precise description of a patient’s multilingual profile. An example of how to obtain objective data for each language profile will be offered. Finally, a case study will be presented to practice using these strategies in clinical practice. Learning Objectives: (1) Describe why multilingual linguistic assessment procedures are important; (2) Identify at least one variable that is important to consider for bilingual/multilingual patients; (3) Identify strategies for determining primary language.
This is an intermediate-level presentation appropriate for neuropsychologists, neuropsychology trainees, and similar professionals.
